Combine ¾ cup of barbecue sauce, 3 tablespoons of molasses, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and Chinese five spice powder to taste to create a substitute for hoisin sauce. Mix the ingredients thoroughly in a bowl.
For a spicy twist, add a few drops of hot red pepper sauce to the mixture. Keep the hoisin sauce substitute refrigerated when it is not in use.
Hoisin sauce is a Chinese sauce that is typically used to glaze meat, as an addition to stir fry recipes or as a dipping sauce. The sweet and salty concoction has a dark color and enhances many dishes in Chinese cuisine.
Chee hau sauce, which is also known as brown bean sauce, can also substitute for hoisin sauce.
