What Is a Standard Toolbar?

A standard toolbar includes all of the most commonly used tools or icons in a piece of software. It usually sits below the top menu bar.

In Microsoft Word, the standard toolbar features buttons for creating a new document, opening a document and saving a document, as well as other tools such as for cutting and pasting. Shortcuts like these come in handy when one uses Microsoft Word, and the exact toolbars shown can be customized to suit individual needs.

Another toolbar in Microsoft Word is the formatting toolbar, which sits below the standard toolbar and features drop-down menus for selecting the font type and font size, along with buttons to bold, italicize and underline text; set page alignment; and change the font color, among other formatting options.
