What Sports Teams Are in Hawaii?
As of 2014, there are no major professional sports franchises that play in the state of Hawaii. The University of Hawaii is the state’s “home team.” Its football, basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and volleyball teams receive wide, enthusiastic support from Hawaii residents.
Although Hawaii is not home to big-league professional sports teams, several exciting and anticipated sporting events take place in the state on a yearly basis. Two of the biggest endurance events in America are held in Hawaii; the World Ironman Triathalon is held on the big island, and the Honolulu Marathon takes place on Oahu.
The National Football League Pro Bowl is held in Hawaii every single year. A perfect chance for Hawaii residents to enjoy NFL action live and in-person, the game features the best players in the entire league. For college football fanatics, the Hawaii Bowl held in December features two NCAA division one schools. The Hula Bowl in Maui lets college seniors display their skills in front of pro-team scouts.
Several major professional golf competitions are held in Hawaii, including The Wendy’s Champions Skins Game, The Mercedes Championships and the Sony Open.
For college basketball aficionados, the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic and the EA Sports Maui Invitational are both held during the holiday season.
