What Are Specs for a 5.3 Chevy Engine?
The Chevrolet L83 is a 5.3-liter V8 engine currently in production, as of March 2015, for Chevrolet trucks. Also known as the EcoTec3 engine, this small-block V8 produces 380 peak horsepower and 416 foot-pounds of torque when used with E85 fuel.
The Chevrolet L83 is an engine in Chevy’s long-running small-block V8 family. Intended primarily for use in pickup trucks, it is currently an engine option on Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models, in which it is paired with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 transmission.
The L83 is also known as the EcoTec3 due to Chevrolet’s use of multiple technologies to improve the efficiency of this engine. It is lighter than many previous truck engines due to the use of an aluminum engine block and cylinder heads, reducing the overall weight of trucks fitted with the L83. Fuel injectors use Active Fuel Management technology to optimize the amount of fuel used by the L83. The L83 also features cylinder deactivation, allowing the engine to shut down some of its cylinders under light driving to further conserve fuel. The results of these technologies are an estimated fuel consumption of 16 miles per gallon in city driving and 23 in highway driving for two-wheel drive trucks that use the L83.
