What Is a SMAC Blood Test?
A SMAC blood test is more often known as a CMP, or a complete metabolic panel, or a chemistry panel. It is a panel of 14 separate measurements of chemicals in the blood that helps doctors to diagnose a patient’s overall health, according to Lab Tests Online.
The 14 chemicals that are measured in a SMAC can be separated into a few categories: electrolyte levels, such as sodium, potassium, calcium and carbon dioxide; kidney function, such as the BUN and creatinine; liver functions; proteins and glucose. If any of these lab values are outside the normal range, it may indicate that a patient is at risk for disorders such as diabetes, kidney or liver insufficiency, or he may have an electrolyte imbalance that needs to be corrected, explains Lab Tests Online.
