What Is a Skin Specialist Called?

A skin specialist is called a dermatologist. This type of doctor is trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the skin, mucous membranes, hair and nails. Among the common conditions a dermatologist treats are acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin cancer.
A dermatologist graduates from medical school before specializing in dermatology, so he is qualified to relate skin conditions to overall health. Many general health conditions affect the skin, hair or nails, so a dermatologist is often part of a health care team for a particular illness. In addition to treating skin conditions, a dermatologist is also knowledgeable about skin care products and regimens.
