What Size Propane Tank Should You Buy?
Last Updated Mar 29, 2020 11:56:05 AM ET

The optimal size of a propane tank depends upon its intended use. Tanks for home heating and cooking are generally 250 to 1000 gallons, whereas tanks for grills normally hold approximately 5 to 10 gallons of propane.
Recreational vehicle propane tank sizes also hold approximately 5 to 10 gallons of propane in most cases. Vacation cabins and small homes sometimes use tanks holding nearly 25 gallons of propane. Smaller tanks are advantageous when portability is a concern, as they can be transported and filled at a propane dealer. Larger tanks require a propane truck to fill them, which means that they are not a good choice for areas with poor road access.
