A piece of sod grass is about 16 inches wide by 24 inches long. Pieces of sod grass are sold on pallets with enough sod to cover 50 square yards.
Buying pieces of sod grass by the pallet allows for more versatility for installation, but the soil must be prepared and tilled prior to layout. The pieces are laid out in a staggered pattern, and the newly laid sod is watered once it is installed.
Sod grass is also available in rolls, which are 40 to 60 inches long by 12 to 18 inches wide, depending on the turf company. Buying sod grass by the roll is a better option for a larger area, but rolls tend to require tractors for optimal installation.
