There are many symptoms of a bad starter, but one of the most notable symptoms is the vehicle failing to start when the key turns to the appropriate starting position. Because a faulty starter mimics other potential problems that may cause the car to not start, such as a bad battery, it is helpful to narrow down the possibilities by ensuring that the battery is not dead or that the car has enough fuel.
Aside from failure to start, other common symptoms of a bad starter include hearing a single loud click when turning the key to crank the engine or having the engine turn over very slowly then stop. Vehicles with a low battery generally make a low whining noise when attempting to start the car.
