Septic pneumonia refers to a lung infection complication causing sepsis, a systemic infection affecting the whole body, according to Mayo Clinic. Sepsis is a serious, life-threatening condition and potentially fatal.
Those at increased risk for sepsis are the elderly, children, immunocompromised people or those with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, AIDS and liver disease, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Sepsis is characterized by fever, chills, increased respiration, rapid breathing and confusion. People suffering from sepsis can develop septic shock, a critical condition resulting in very low blood pressure, as reported by MedlinePlus. Septic shock requires medical attention immediately.
