How Do You Get Scratches Out of Chrome?

Removing scratches from a chrome surface entails applying polish to an extremely fine steel wool pad, then sanding the scratch from the surface. Use red jewelers rouge or a chrome polish for this project, as well as a soft cloth or #000 steel wool pad. Use this process only for light scratches on the surface of the chrome.

  1. Apply polish to soft cloth or steel wool

Apply polish directly to the steel wool pad or soft cloth. The polish must be made specifically for chrome; otherwise there is a risk of ruining the finish of the chrome altogether.

  2. Sand the scratch

Using the steel wool or cloth with polish applied, begin sanding the scratch and surrounding areas of chrome, using a circular motion. To avoid any further scratching of the surface, use only a circular motion. Apply more polish to keep the area moist as needed.

  3. Dry the surface

Using a dry, microfiber cloth, remove the polish from the chrome. Inspect the chrome for any more scratches. If any scratches remain, apply more polish, and use the dry cloth to buff out the scratches. If this doesn’t solve the issue, repeat the whole process until the scratches are no longer visible.
