The scales of justice stand for the idea of balancing truth and fairness in the justice system. In ancient Greek mythology, the scales of justice represent divine justice.
The scales of justice may be depicted alone or held by the Lady Justice. The Lady Justice is also known as Justitia, who is the Roman goddess of justice. The Roman goddess also wears a blindfold, which represents the idea of justice being blind. The Lady Justice can be traced as far back as the ancient Egyptian goddesses Isis and Maat. Later depictions of Lady Justice include Dike, the Greek goddess of mortal justice.
