Chlorine bleach can be used to treat swimming pool water, according to How Stuff Works. The amount of bleach required varies depending on the concentration of the bleach and the amount of water in the pool.
Chlorine is used in swimming pools because it kills bacteria and algae, among other organisms, making the water safe for swimming. A gallon of 5.25 percent chlorine bleach added to 60,000 gallons of water produces a chlorine concentration of one part per million. The ideal level of chlorine residual for a swimming pool ranges between one and three parts per million. Chlorine levels in swimming pools are measured using water testing kits.
