To properly remove sulfate from a battery, connect it to a pulse-type battery charger. The charger will send electronic pulses through the battery to quickly dissolve any sulfation found inside.
Sulfation is a process that occurs in every type of battery when it is overcharged or undercharged; it is the primary cause of battery failure. The only way to prevent sulfation is to stimulate it with a consistent 12.4 volt charge through the battery every few days. However, once the sulfation has occurred, a high-frequency charger is required to remove it. The following instructions explain how to desulfate a battery using a high-frequency battery charger.
- Remove the Battery Unplug and remove the battery from the vehicle. Make sure to remove the negative terminal first.
- Secure the Battery Secure the battery to a solid surface. Avoid grounding the terminals to prevent shock.
- Attach Charger Plug the charger into the wall and attach it to the battery. The charger should be set to deliver high-frequency electronic pulses, as these pulses are what dissolve the sulfate from inside the battery.
- Charge the Battery Leave the battery connected to the charger for as long as its voltage requires, but not exceeding 12 hours.
- Remove the Charger Unplug the charger from the battery and reinstall it into the vehicle. Connect the positive terminal first and then the negative. Start the car to ensure that it operates properly.
