What Are Romeo’s Character Traits?
Romeo is an emotional and reckless character but also a very loyal friend. The reader sees Romeo in love twice in the time span of only a few days; first with Rosaline, then immediately after with Juliet, upon his seeing her. Besides love, he is also prone to fits of passion in anger, by killing Tybalt after Tybalt kills his friend, Mercutio. He also falls into such sadness after thinking that Juliet was dead, that he kills himself.
Recklessly endangering his own life when he sneaks onto Juliet’s balcony, Romeo can be seen as quite a foolish character, too. He is a hopeless romantic who is very fond of romantic literature and poetry. His relationships, then, could be an attempt to emulate the sort of intense relationships he reads.
Juliet, the primary object of Romeo’s affections, is another character who falls in love very quickly. She agrees to betray her family, the Capulets, by eloping with a member of their enemy family, the Montagues, after having known Romeo only a few days.
The tale of these star-crossed lovers takes place in the city of Verona, Italy, and covers the events of four days. William Shakespeare wrote this play at the end of 16th century.
