How Do You Replace the Battery in a Generac Generator?

To replace a battery in a Generac generator, first disconnect the battery charger. Next, remove the outer panel on the generator, disconnect the old battery and replace it with a new one. Instructional videos for replacing generator batteries are available on YouTube.

It important to disconnect the battery charger to avoid dropping the positive terminal and shorting the charger. Simply push the ends together, press the connector button and pull the pieces away from each other. Remember to reconnect it once the battery is replaced.

Next, use a 1/2-inch wrench to disconnect the actual battery. Be sure to wash your hands after removing the battery as acid may contaminate the skin. Check the new battery, and make sure the terminals are clean. If the generator terminals are dirty, scrape them clean with a cleaning tool or pocket knife. Most hardware stores sell special tools for cleaning electrical equipment.

Remember to always attach the positive terminal first. The positive terminal has a red cord, and the negative terminal is black. When tightening the positive terminal, be careful not to touch the wrench to any metal on the battery as this could create a spark of electricity that has the potential to damage tools and the equipment.
