How Do You Repair an Over-Wound Music Box?
Repair an over-wound music box by applying a lubricant, and carefully freeing the governor. This allows the mechanism to turn. This task requires a special cleaner and lubricant, such as Alum-a-Lub.

Obtain the correct lubricant
Purchase Alum-a-Lub at either a local hardware store or through the Alumalub website. Alum-a-Lub is preferable to a standard lubricant or oil because it does not clog the music box mechanism.

Inject the lubricant into the mechanism
You may have to remove screws to access the mechanism if there are no holes or openings in the box. Inject the Alum-a-Lub into the music box mechanism. Cover all metal areas of the mechanism, including the top, base and center. Let it stand for at least 20 minutes.

Turn the key backwards
Slowly turn the key backwards to unwind the spring and release the governor. If this does not restart the music box, move on to the next step.

Tap the mechanism
Tap the mechanism several times, preferably at the bottom. Repeat several times if necessary. If neither of these attempts is successful, move on to the next step.

Move the governor around manually
Add additional lubricant, and move the governor around with your hand or a soft piece of cotton. Be gentle to prevent the governor from becoming misaligned. It may come free immediately, or the box may restart on its own over time.

Restart the music box
After the music box works again, wind and play it several times.
