Remove the agitator from a GE washer by first removing the agitator cap and fabric-softener dispenser. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove the agitator bolt, and then carefully lift out the agitator.

  1. Gather your tools

You need a socket wrench, a 10-inch socket extension, a 7/16-inch socket and a flat-head screwdriver to remove the agitator from a GE washer.

  2. Unplug the washing machine

Ensure that the washing machine is unplugged from the wall to safely remove the agitator. Lift the lid to access agitator.

  3. Remove the fabric-softening dispenser

Pull out the fabric-softener dispenser located on the top of the agitator. Hold the small ring along the bottom of the dispenser, and lift up to remove the dispenser.

  4. Remove the agitator cap

Remove the agitator cap by inserting a flat-head screwdriver along the edge of the agitator and agitator cap. Pop the cap from the top of the agitator by twisting the screwdriver. Skip this step for washers without an agitator cap.

  5. Connect an inch socket extension

Connect a 10-inch socket extension to a socket wrench, and then attach a 7/16-inch socket to the extension.

  6. Remove the agitator bolt

Remove the agitator bolt by inserting the socket into the agitator from the inside. Turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the bolt. Reach your fingers beneath the agitator, and lift it out carefully to remove it.
