Follwoing a brief recovery period in the hospital, patients can generally expect to spend one to two weeks recovering at home after retinal surgery, according to FCI Opthalmics. Even after the initial one to two weeks, patients should avoid traveling and changes in altitude without permission of a physician.

During the first week after retinal surgery, patients should rest and avoid excessive movement, states FCI Opthalmics. Patients should avoid activities that require close vision, such as watching television or reading, during this time. Patients should not engage in strenuous physical activity for a month after surgery. Patients with sedentary jobs can return to work after 10 to 14 days, but people whose jobs require more activity should check with their physician before returning to work.
