A good recipe for homemade pear jelly using six pounds of pears, sugar and pectin. You can also substitute 6 cups of pear juice for the pears, and cinnamon is an optional ingredient.

The only ingredients to make homemade pear jelly include six pounds of pears, seven cups of sugar, and pectin. This yields eight to nine 8-ounce jars of jelly, but you can adjust the number of pears based on the desired yield. Several tools are needed to make homemade jellies, including a vegetable peeler, knife, a large pot, a food mill and the jars to hold the jelly.

Once everything is ready, wash and peel the pears, and then chop them and cook them in a large pot. Add about 1 inch of water in the pot and all the chopped pears, and then cover the pot until the cooked pears are totally soft. After the pears have cooked, crush and strain the pears in the food mill to turn it into pear juice.

Next, add the sugar and pectin. The amount of sugar and type of pectin depends on how sweet the jelly should be. For regular jelly, add the pectin and a quarter cup of sugar to the pot of pear juice. Once it boils, add the rest of the sugar. Bring this mixture back to a boil and let it boil for one minute. The mixture is done and can be added to the jars.
