The real names of Batman and the original Robin in the DC Comics comic books are Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics in 1939 and Robin appeared a year later in 1940.
After Bruce Wayne saw his parents killed when he was a young child, he trained hard as he grew up so that he could avenge their deaths, becoming Batman. Dick Grayson also saw his parents killed, and when Batman investigated the crime he noted the similarities between himself and the young boy. Dick Grayson was very angry until Bruce took him under his wing and trained him to help him fight crimes and keep Gotham City safe. Others who have served as Robin include Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Carrie Kelley, Stephanie Brown and Damian Wayne.
