Who Qualifies for Medicare SilverSneakers Benefits?
The Medicare SilverSneakers Fitness program is available to any member of the more than 65 Medicare health plans that offer memberships. Those that are enrolled in Medicare Advantage health plans that do not offer SilverSneakers memberships may join by purchasing memberships at fitness centers that participate in the program.
The SilverSneakers program offers fitness classes designed to increase muscle strength, endurance, range of motion, flexibility, balance, coordination and agility. SilverSneakers exercise programs are geared toward elderly adults. Classes are taught by certified fitness instructors who are trained in CPR and emergency procedures. Typical exercise equipment used during fitness training include hand-held weights and exercise balls. Some classes offer chairs as needed for additional support. Classes range in length from 45 to 60 minutes and are offered a minimum of twice weekly. Classes vary in intensity.
The SilverSneakers program also offers nutritional education that is provided by fitness instructors as well as occasional guest speakers. Members that do not have access to fitness centers participating in the program may elect to participate in the self-directed fitness program, and are provided with supplemental tools and exercise equipment. Most fitness centers that participate in the SilverSneakers program also offer access to standard exercise equipment, such as treadmills, weights and stationary bicycles.
