Prune a hibiscus just before the growing season so the rising temperatures can induce the plant to grow. Make sure the temperature is mild rather than extremely hot or cold when you prune. Pruning in extreme temperatures stresses a hibiscus plant.
Typically, the time to prune a hibiscus depends on the climate in which it is planted. In a warm climate, a hibiscus may do well if it is pruned in the fall. However, fall pruning does not work for a hibiscus in a cool climate. Prune hibiscus plants kept in pots in the fall when you bring them inside for the winter.
