How Do You Program the Keypad of a Craftsman Garage Door?

Programming the keypad for a Craftsman garage door opener requires pressing the smart button on the back of the unit, entering a new code and pressing enter. The unit signals that it has accepted the new code by blinking the light or clicking twice.

  1. Press the smart button

Use a stepladder and follow ladder safety procedures to access the garage door opener motor. Find the smart button on the back of the garage door opener motor. It could be red, amber, purple or orange, but it is a square button located directly below the number one screw. Press the button and release it. The button remains illuminated for 30 seconds.

  2. Enter the new code

Move to the numeric keypad and enter a new four-digit code before the 30 seconds are over. Press and hold the enter button on the keypad, so the unit learns the new code.

  3. Watch for the flashing light

If you have successfully entered the new code, the overhead light on the unit flashes two times in rapid succession. If the unit doesn’t have a light bulb installed, listen for two quick clicks. Release the button after the flash. Entering the new code on the keypad and pressing enter should now open the door from the outside.
