The prognosis for a grade III astrocytoma suggests that around 27 percent of afflicted individuals live for at least five more years following diagnosis, according to Cancer Research UK. Those with grade IV astrocytomas usually live less than a year.
The standard treatment procedure for a grade III, or anaplastic, astrocytoma is surgery combined with radiation therapy, states the National Cancer Institute. This treatment plan can also include chemotherapy. Anaplastic astrocytomas are most common in individuals between the ages of 30 and 50, explains WebMD. These cases account for approximately 4 percent of all brain tumors. Astrocytes are the star-shaped brain cells that become cancerous in astrocytoma.
