How Do You Pressurize a Well Tank?
Pressurizing a well tank can often be done on your own but requires a few steps and some equipment. You will need a tire gauge and an air compressor or a manual bike pump.
All water tank systems have a rubber bladder that helps regulate water pressure. Over time, this bladder can naturally lose air pressure. Maintaining proper air pressure in the tank allows for efficient and steady water pressure.
First, turn off the power to the tank and then check the specifications for the amount of pressure your tank requires. You can find this in the manual or labeled on the tank. Typical tanks require air pressure ranges from 35 to 45 pounds per square inch. Next, release all water pressure by draining all of the water from the tank. This can be done by either turning on a faucet until no more water runs out or by connecting a hose to the tank’s drain and running it outside.
After the tank is empty, locate the valve stem for the rubber air bladder. It looks similar to a tire valve. Use the tire gauge to check the air pressure level. Connect the air compressor or bike pump to the valve and add air. Do this for no more than 30 seconds, as too much air can cause the bladder to burst. Again, use the tire gauge to check the air pressure. Repeat these steps until the gauge reads a pressure that is recommended for that tank’s specific brand. Once the desired pressure is reached, turn the power back on to the tank.
