Is It Possible to Roast Hazelnuts Still in the Shell?
It is possible to roast hazelnuts still in the shell. Roasting hazelnuts while still in the shell makes it easier to remove the nuts from their shells and add a depth of flavor to the nut. Hazelnuts can be eaten raw, chopped to make a pastry coating or ground into a paste to make hazelnut butter.
Roasting hazelnuts in the shell only takes a few minutes and a couple of steps.
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Heat the to medium heat, such as 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2: Arrange the hazelnuts
Spread the hazelnuts out in an even layer onto a baking sheet.
Step 3: Roast the nuts
Place the baking sheet into the oven, and roast for between 10 and 15 minutes. Remove the nuts and place them into a large kitchen towel to steam for about a minute.
Step 4: Remove the shells
Rub the nuts vigorously in the towel to remove the shells. Allow the nuts to cool completely before using.
