Popular funeral hymns include “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Amazing Grace” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” Other hymns commonly sung at funerals include “How Great Thou Art” and “Be Thou My Vision.”

Hymns considered appropriate for funerals often include themes such as God’s faithfulness through difficult circumstances, heaven, celebration of a Christian’s life, and Jesus’ death and resurrection. “Amazing Grace” is one of the most well-known hymns, so many funeral attendees are likely be familiar with it. “It Is Well With My Soul” is another common funeral hymn that focuses on peacefulness in the midst of life’s difficulties.

While funeral hymns are stereotypically slow and more serious in tone, celebratory hymns are equally appropriate for a Christian funeral. “When We All Get to Heaven” is musically upbeat and celebrates the idea that Christians will live together in heaven eternally. Similarly, “Blessed Assurance” focuses on themes of eternal life and participation in God’s glory.

If the deceased person was a regular churchgoer, he may have had a favorite hymn known to family members or friends. In this case, it is also appropriate to sing that hymn out of respect and honor for the one who has died.
