How Do I Play RM Files in a VLC Player?

RM (Real Media) files can be played using the VLC media player by streaming the files locally using a streaming filter within the program. This filter uses the RM codec installed in the VLC program to display a variety of RM file types. Audio for the files will play, but some RM video files will not display video due to propriety RM codecs.

  1. Setup VLC streaming

Open the Media menu in the VLC player and select the Streaming option from the drop-down menu. The Streaming option can also be selected by pressing the CTRL + S keys simultaneously.

  2. Change the filter

In the Open box, select the File tab. This will display a file browser showing the directory structure of the PC along with a list of files in the selected directory. In the Filter section, use the drop-down menu to select the All files option to show all file types in your directories.

  3. Select the RM file

Use the left section of the file browser window to navigate to the directory containing the RM file. Select the RM file to be played using the right file listing section in the file browser window. Press the Play button at the bottom of the window to open the Stream Output window.

  4. Play the file

Click on the Play Locally box in the Stream Output window and then press Stream to start the file in the VLC media player.
