What Is a Pick Axe Used For?
Pick axes are used as tools for landscaping, breaking up hard surfaces and as farming implements. A pick axe consists of a handle and a head made of metal that has both a pointed and blunt end. The pointed end breaks up hard surfaces, while the blunt end can be used to pry things up.
A pick axe can often break up soils that a shovel can’t. Dry, hardened clay or rocky soils can be broken up using the sharp end of the axe. Tree roots are much easier to remove if a pick axe is used to loosen the soil around the base of the tree. Defining edging and removing turf is also simpler when a pick axe is used. Once ground has been leveled, the mounds of dirt left behind can be broken up with a pick axe before it’s hauled away.
Hard surfaces such as cement, tile and ice can be broken up with a pick axe. Ice hanging from gutters or covering sidewalks can be removed by striking it with a pick axe, preventing damage to both people and the property from ice build up. Using a pick axe to break up cement and tile is more precise than other forms of removal and allows for the removal of small or large sections.
The pick axe can be used as a lever in farming, allowing large items such as hay bales and sacks of feed to be lifted easily.
