The number of pay phones continues to decline. From 2000 to 2011, the number of payphones dropped from 2.2 million to 425,000. The American Public Communications Council indicates the number will continue to diminish by 10 percent each year.
In the past, pay phones were managed by major phone companies, such as AT&T and Verizon. However, these companies now focus on the cellphone market, leaving control over most of the pay phone industry to smaller businesses.
