Payne brand air conditioners are manufactured by Payne Heating and Cooling Systems, a company owned by United Technologies Corporation Business and Industrial Systems and based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
D. W. Payne originally founded the company in 1914 in Los Angeles, CA. In 1945, Payne became part of Affiliated Gas Equipment Inc. (AGE), along with two other manufacturers of heating and cooling systems, Bryant and Day & Night. Purchased by the Carrier Corporation in 1955, AGE later became BDP in 1974. In 1996, Payne once again became a separate company, although one still owned by Carrier and, as of 2013, Carrier's parent company, United Technologies Corporation.
