What Is the Best Paint to Use on Canvas?

Oil paints and acrylics are equally effective paints for use on canvas. Both produce true, bright colors that can be applied in thick, textured strokes, or diluted, sheer washes.
There are differences between the characteristics of oils and acrylics, and artists choose paint based on aesthetic goals, personal preference and convenience. When working with acrylics, brushes, knives and pallets can be cleaned with water as long as the paint has not been allowed to dry. Oil painting equipment must be cleaned with oils and solvents, and once laid on, oil paint takes longer to dry than acrylic paint. Both types of paint contribute to rich, long-lasting pieces of art.
