How Painful Is the Recovery From TURP Surgery?

Recovery from transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery includes mild tenderness and soreness. Pain medication may be administered in the hospital, and over-the-counter pain relievers can relieve discomfort at home.

Patients recovering from TURP surgery should avoid heavy lifting for several weeks after returning home to prevent bleeding and pain. Doctors also usually advise against driving for several weeks. Each patient is different and a doctor may provide different instructions depending on an individual patient’s circumstances.

A patient should contact his doctor if pain increases at or near the surgery site of if he experiences fever, chills, redness, swelling or bleeding from the incision site, according to Hopkins Medicine.
