Superstitions about an itchy nose vary geographically, but one common myth claims an itchy nose means you are about to receive a visitor. Additionally, which side of the nose the itch occurs on dictates the gender of the uninvited guest. If the left side of your nose itches, the visitor is going to be a man, while itching on the right side means a woman caller is likely. This specific folklore is common in the southern region of the United States, but other itchy nose superstitions exist elsewhere.

According to some old wives’ tales, an itchy nose does not predict a visit from a person at all. Rather, if the tip of your nose itches, it is thought that a letter is to arrive soon. It is not clear whether this superstition includes receiving email. Common among northern Americans is the notion that if you have an itchy nose, you are going to kiss a fool. Another popular notion is that you are going to lose your temper or find yourself in the middle of an argument. Other itchy nose superstitions include that someone is talking about you, perhaps even spreading falsehoods, or that you are going to receive money soon.
