What Is One of Ina Garten’s Recipes for Sugar Cookies?

One of Ina Garten’s recipes for sugar cookies from her show, “Barefoot Contessa,” is animal cookies using flour, butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Another recipe, although not technically billed as a sugar cookie recipe, is daisy shortbread cookies.

Make Ina Garten’s sugar cookies by sifting together 24 ounces of flour, 1 1/4 teaspoons of baking powder and 3/4 teaspoons of salt in one bowl and creaming together 2 1/4 cups of sugar and 3/4 pound of softened butter in another bowl. Stir 3 eggs and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract into the butter mixture, and then slowly add in the flour mixture. Chill the dough, and roll it out onto a floured surface. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, and place the shapes on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake the cookies at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for eight to 12 minutes.

After the cookies cool, decorate them with royal icing made from 1 pound of confectioners’ sugar, 3 large egg whites and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice.

To make daisy shortbread cookies, cream together 1 cup of sugar and 3/4 pound of softened unsalted butter, and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix together the wet and dry ingredients until they are just combined, and chill the dough for 30 minutes. Roll it out until it is 1/4-inch thick, and cut out flower shapes using cookie cutters. Bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, and frost them with 3/4 pound of confectioners’ sugar mixed with water.
