What Neutralizes Ammonia Smell?

To neutralize ammonia smell from pet urine, one can use simple home products, such as vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Because ammonia is an alkaline or basic substance, a product that is acidic, such as vinegar, can clean and neutralize ammonia odor and stains.

One method is to pour undiluted white vinegar onto the affected area to soak it completely, wait a few minutes and then blot it dry with clean paper towels.

A second method is to use baking soda. This may be useful if the smell is in carpets. Pour baking soda on the area of the carpet with the ammonia smell, allow it to sit for a few hours, and vacuum the area.

Hydrogen peroxide is another home remedy used for cleaning and removing ammonia odor. Combine hydrogen peroxide with water in a two to one ratio, pour this over the area, and allow it to sit for 10 minutes before blotting with paper towels.
