How Do You Find a Network Security Key?

To find the network security key for a wireless network in Windows 7, access the Control Panel, open the Properties window of the network via Network and Sharing Center, and select the option that displays the password. Alternatively, find the security key by accessing the configuration webpage of the router.

In case the wireless router includes a default security key or password, look for terms such as Security Key, Wireless Key or WPA Key in the documentation that came with the device or the label at the bottom of the router. If you can’t find the security key that way, find it by opening the Control Panel, clicking on Network and Internet, and selecting the Network and Sharing Center option. Right-click on the name of the wireless network, select the Properties option from the dropdown menu, and check the box next to the Show Characters option.

To find the security key via the configuration webpage, open a Web browser, type the IP address of the wireless router in the address bar, and enter the username and password if necessary. Once the configuration webpage appears, click on Wireless or Wireless Settings, and find the Security or Wireless Encryption Settings section. This section should display the security key, although it’s sometimes labeled as passphrase, network key or network password, depending on the router.
