What Is a Navy CAG Officer?

According to the Federation of American Scientists, a navy CAG officer is the air wing commander. CAG officers are in charge of the operational readiness and tactical performance of the air wing.

It is the CAG officer’s responsibility to coordinate and supervise all activities of embarked squadrons and detachments. The officer is also in charge of the material readiness, intelligence functions and communications of the air wing.

Typically, the commanding officer is placed in charge of the entire aircraft carrier. However, on carriers with embarked aircraft, the air wing commander and commanding officer act as co-commanders. In these situations, both report directly to the composite warfare commander.
