What Is NACI Clearance?

National Agency Check with Inquiries, or NACI, is a background investigation performed for potential federal employees who might be accessing classified information. As the minimum investigation required, a NACI check is considered for public trust positions with no bearing on national security.

NACI investigations include verification of education and employment history and checking character references. Information Technology Director is an example of a position that would require a NACI check because of the role’s access to government information that is stored on computer systems and networks such as personnel records and technical data. A NACI investigation on its own is not sufficient for security clearance determination because it does not include a credit check.
