Are Muscle Relaxers Available Over the Counter?
Traditional muscle relaxants, such as cyclobenzaprine, are not available over the counter. An over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen, is often sufficient to alleviate the pain associated with a muscle spasm, according to ConsumerReports.
Studies have shown minimal difference between the pain relief provided by over-the-counter medications in comparison to prescription muscle relaxants, which have sedative effects, as explained by ConsumerReports. Pain relievers available without a prescription include naproxen sodium, acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen. Increased dosages of naproxen sodium and ibuprofen are available by prescription, as are traditional muscle relaxants, including cyclobenzaprine, celecoxib and meloxicam, according to registered nurse Debra Wood at CVS.com.
