How Much Turmeric Should You Take for Inflammation?

Take 500 milligrams of turmeric powder twice per day for inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, according to WebMD. The recommended dosage ranges from 400 to 600 milligrams three times daily, as stated by the University of Maryland Medical Center and Dr. Andrew Weil.

Take turmeric orally using the fresh root, dried root, standardized powder, tincture or fluid extract, according to UMMC. Eat up to three grams of cut root or dried root daily. Take between 30 and 90 drops of the fluid extract per day or 15 to 30 drops of a tincture four times per day. These dosages are for adults as studies on children have not been undertaken.

One study indicates turmeric extracts worked just as well as ibuprofen to ease pain associated with osteoarthritis. Other research shows turmeric extracts, either alone or with other herbal remedies, can reduce pain from osteoarthritis, according to WebMD. One specific study showed an Ayurvedic formula of turmeric, white cherry, boswelia and zinc reduced pain and disability in people with osteoarthritis, as referenced by UMMC. It is unknown whether turmeric or the other ingredients contributed to lower inflammation.

Patients may have to wait two months before seeing the full benefits of turmeric products, according to Dr. Weil. The herb may also benefit people with tendonitis and auto-immune conditions. Do not take the herb if you have gallstones or bile duct problems. Purchase extracts that contain 95 percent curcuminoids, which is the major component of turmeric.
