How Much Does a Skid Steer Weigh?

Skid steers can weigh between 2,050 and 10,520 pounds, depending on the manufacturer and the model. The operating weight of a skid steer is the weight of the skid steer with a full tank of gas, its tires, its bucket and a 175-pound operator. The operating weight of most skid steers falls between 4,000 and 9,900 pounds.

In addition to their operating weight, skid steers are compared based on their tipping load, which is the weight at which the rear wheels lift off the ground, and their rated operating capacity, which is generally half the tipping weight. The ROC of skids steers can be anywhere from 600 to 3,700 pounds.

The wheels on each side of a skid steer can be operated independently of the other side, and the unit is moved by allowing the wheels on one side to turn, while stopping the wheels on the other side, which skid in place. A skid steer is highly maneuverable in tight spaces and can turn within the space of its own footprint. There are hundreds of different attachments available for use with skid steers, from dump buckets to industrial magnets, which make skid steers suitable for construction, demolition and agricultural uses.
