The Chevrolet ZZ383 Stroker produces 450 horsepower at 5,500 revolutions per minute (R.P.M.). The engine is popular with enthusiasts who re-engineer the 383 to produce more horsepower, and several engineering companies specialize in the manufacture and sale of these up-rated engines.
The engine is a development of the Chevrolet 350 engine and uses many common components. The 383 is a straight eight-cylinder engine. The Chevrolet 383 Stroker's name derives from the size of the engine, 383 cubic inches and the additional stroke that is gained by using a different cam shaft. The different cam shaft and connecting rods give an additional 0.27 inch stroke. When this is added up over the eight cylinder, an extra 33 cubic inches is gained.
