An official hockey puck weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces, has a diameter of 3 inches, is 1 inch thick and is made of vulcanized rubber. The National Hockey League is responsible for approving pucks that are used in games.
The home team supplies the hockey pucks and keeps them at the penalty bench in frozen condition. While the pucks weigh just 6 ounces, ABC News reports about a five-year study conducted by Dr. Dave Milzman, who is the medical director at MCI Arena in Washington and a professor at Georgetown University, that concludes hockey pucks are dangerous and hit three to four people on average each game. The ABC News report came in March of 2014 when a 13-year-old girl died after being struck by a hockey puck during an NHL game.
