How Much Are Foster Parents Paid?
According to the advocacy group Children’s Rights, the amount paid to foster parents by the state depends on a number of factors, including the age and health of the child and the state in which the foster parent resides. Foster parents are generally paid a daily rate that is intended to cover room, board, food and other expenses.
The amounts paid vary widely. In California, foster parents are allotted $785 per month plus travel and childcare costs to keep a 9-year-old child. In Kentucky, foster parents are paid $652 per month for fostering a child of the same age. Other payments may be made for the child’s upkeep, including a clothing allowance and money to cover special expenses. A bigger allotment may be given for children with special medical needs and for kids that require more supervision.
