Each size category is defined by the diameter of the stones, such as 4 inches or 9 inches. Small rip rap stone is good for driveways, gravel roads and erosion control. Medium-sized rip rap stone is used on railways, or along shorelines as erosion control. Large rip rap stone may be used on hillsides for erosion control, or in drainage ditches.
