Rip rap weighs between 1.5 and 2.0 tons per cubic yard. Rip rap varies in weight because smaller sizes of rip rap can pack more stone into each cubic yard. Rip rap is crushed stone that has been separated by size; it comes in various size categories.
Each size category is defined by the diameter of the stones, such as 4 inches or 9 inches. Small rip rap stone is good for driveways, gravel roads and erosion control. Medium-sized rip rap stone is used on railways, or along shorelines as erosion control. Large rip rap stone may be used on hillsides for erosion control, or in drainage ditches.
