A cubic yard of dirt could vary in weight from roughly 2,000 to 2,700 pounds. Several variables, such as organic structure, texture, grain and moisture level, significantly influence the weight of soil.
The moisture level is by far the most significant factor in weight. Sandy soil tends to drain water better and is consequently lighter, and soil with a greater clay content absorbs more water and has more weight. The grains in clay are also small and compact, adding to its tendency to trap moisture. For the best plant growth, clay-rich soils require drainage assistance, and coarse, sandy soils require more watering.
