The weight of a cello is determined by factors such as the density of the wood, the thickness of the wood and the type of other materials used in its construction. A sampling of different celli can show a variance of between 2600 and 3500 grams.
String instruments create sound through the wood vibrating as the bow is moved across the strings. A heavier instrument requires more force to produce sound, so instrument makers strive to keep the instruments as light as possible. It is possible for a heavier instrument to produce a beautiful sound, but most celli fall within the 5 to 7 pound range.
