According to TomatoDirt.com, an average medium-sized tomato weighs 5 to 6 ounces. A small tomato weighs 3 or 4 ounces, and a large tomato weighs 7 ounces or more.
While botanically, tomatoes are fruits, they are considered vegetables for most culinary purposes. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and other nutrients. Studies have shown that consumption of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, can improve skin's ability to protect against ultraviolet rays and may even help prevent cancer. Naturally low in calories and nearly fat-free, tomatoes also contain beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K.
Tomatoes are best stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Refrigeration can harm a tomato's flavor.
